Scottish trio CHVRCHES returns today with the polished pop delicacy, “He Said She Said.” Never one to mince words, the track finds lead vocalist and co-songwriter Lauren Mayberry launching some of her most direct lyrics on overcoming the daily pressures and expectations women face from men.

While repeating comments previously directing at Mayberry about her weight, navigating success, sharing her opinions, and being a woman in the world and music industry, the singer returns to the refrain, “I feel like I’m losing my mind,” a relatable sentiment for women that have endured similar experiences and one the world relates to following pandemic year 2020.

Arriving after the band’s third album, Love Is Dead, “He Said She Said” sparkles brightly with the anthemic hooks and dance-inducing synthpop production fans have always loved from the Glaswegian outfit. Revisiting the band’s signature sound while dropping a fresh cut of buzzing alt-pop.

“Like everyone, I’ve had a lot of time to think and reflect over the past year; to examine experiences I had previously glossed over or deeply buried,” shares Mayberry. “I feel like I have spent a lot of my life (personally and professionally) performing the uncomfortable balancing act that is expected of women and it gets more confusing and exhausting the older I get. “‘He Said She Said’ is my way of reckoning with things I’ve accepted that I know I shouldn’t have. Things I pretended weren’t damaging to me. It was the first song we wrote when we started back up, and the opening line (“He said, You bore me to death”) was the first lyric that came out.

No doubt a perfect addition to their discography, the song is the first preview of CHVRCHES’ upcoming fourth studio album. Following international tours through 2019, the band intended to return home to work on their next album. Months later, with the pandemic looming, CHVRCHES ended up separated by the Atlantic Ocean, Mayberry and Doherty self-isolating in Los Angeles, Cook in Glasgow. Like many, the band had to implement new creative meaures to craft their latest offering, leading to a record unlike anything they’ve made before. More on CHVRCHES here.
