color theory due 02/28 on Loma Vista Records
Soccer Mommy returns today with “circle the drain,” the lead single off her newly-announced album, color theory. On the nostalgic indie track, Sophie Allison shares her ongoing mental health trials, discussing feeling emotionally chained while trying to falsify emotions and strength for those close to her. Watch below.
“I think there’s mold through my brain/ it’s spreading down all the way through my heart and my body” she croons over 90s-inspired drums and pronounced guitars licks. It’s just the latest example of the intrudingly vulnerable and intimate lyricism that made Soccer Mommy’s album, Clean such an essential indie debut.

As detailed in a press release, color theory will explore three central themes: blue, representing sadness and depression; yellow, symbolizing physical and emotional illness; and, finally, gray, representing darkness, emptiness, and loss. The album was produced by Gabe Wax (who also produced Clean), mixed by Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta, HEALTH, St. Vincent), and features the live Soccer Mommy band on studio recording for the first time.
