Fantasy is out via Atlantic Records
DJ/producer Whethan has unleashed his hotly-anticipated debut album, FANTASY. The ambitious 15-track project is highlighted by the standout single “Drumdown Mambo” feat. Jasiah, which is also accompanied by a lyric video. Watch below.
FANTASY sees the Chicago producer uniting with an exceptional collection of artists – including Chrome Sparks, Jaymes Young, The Wombats, The Knocks, Mr. Gabriel, The Front Bottoms, RL Grime, and more. As was hinted with the tracks released ahead of the album, Whethan’s genre-bending record is a nod to his keen sense for remaining sonically ahead of the curve and for drawing deep inspiration from the world around him to create irresistible, anthemic music.
“Fantasy is getting on a spaceship and teleporting anywhere your dreams can imagine,” shares Whethan. “I wanted to make a project that was full of energy and artists that I’m inspired by. There was an underlying theme of alternative meets psychedelic dance music and I wanted to be able to blast every song at my shows or have it feel like you’re at a show when listening at home or in the car. I got to work with some of my favorite artists like RL Grime, Grouplove, The Wombats, bülow, and many more. I grew a lot while working on the album over the span of the last 3 years and you can hear it through the different styles and feelings on each track.”
In addition to the songs unveiled ahead of the album, Whethan’s far-reaching influences are heard across songs like “Sunshine,” the disco-infused dancefloor-burner with The Knocks, “Upside Down,” the dreamy alt-bass crossover with Grouplove, and many others. While tracks like “Freefall” with Oliver Tree feel timeless, like that one FIFA soundtrack song you never forgot.
