“r u ok” is out via RCA Records/Ministry of Sound
Tate McRae is sealing a blockbuster year with her latest song and music video, “r u ok.” The emerging star does not mince words while delivering her falsetto-rich, honey-soaked lines about moving on from a toxic person and relationship. Contrasting the song’s vibrant electropop vibes are pensive and revelatory lyrics on a love interest’s crumbling affairs.
“‘r u ok’ is a song that I never thought I’d write,” shares McRae. “It has a very sassy and feisty tone, which made it a challenge to dive into that perspective – as I think I’m quite the opposite. I love that in this song there is a lot of emotional meaning behind the lyrics, with very trappy, bright, and contrasting production at the same time.” Watch the song’s trippy video below.
Co-written with Bryan Fryzel (Blackbear, MGK) and Elizabeth Lowell Boland (Hailee Steinfield, Madison Beer), the song arrives as a strong bookend to an astronomical year for the 17-year-old Canadian. In addition to unveiling her breakout EP, all the things i never said, Tate released her runaway single, “you broke me first,” which continues to soar globally. With over 500 million streams, the song helped Tate secure a spot in the Top 5 on Billboard’s Emerging Artist Chart and on the Hot 100.
Internationally, the song peaked at #3 on the UK Singles Chart and has remained in the Top 10 on the chart for two months. It’s also Top 25 on various singles charts in 12 countries. The track is platinum in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Singapore, and Sweden and gold in the US, UK, Indonesia & Malaysia. Stream “r u ok” below.
