Smithsonian Announces FUTURES Remixed Festival

FUTURES Remixed Festival is on November 20th: RSVP

America’s first National Museum, Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building (AIB), has announced a groundbreaking new experience, “FUTURES,” including the FUTURES Remixed Festival, on Saturday, November 20th.

The FUTURES Remixed Festival – featuring performances from SHAED, Bright Light Bright Light, Mariah the Scientist, Malik Dope, the cast of HBO Max series “LEGENDARY,” and more – is the culmination of a month-long free opening celebration, inviting people of all ages to experience a radically imagined future where diverse perspectives come together to learn, problem solve and create.

On view through July 6, 2022, “FUTURES” is the Smithsonian’s first major building-wide exploration of the future and will temporarily reopen the Smithsonian’s oldest museum for the first time in nearly two decades. The part-exhibition, part-festival will celebrate the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary with more than 150 awe-inspiring objects, ideas, prototypes, and installations that fuse art, technology, design, and history to help visitors imagine many possible futures on the horizon.

In early November, FUTURES on the Move portals will open: To give Washingtonians a small taste of what is to come, look for creative wheatpasting (a type of street art) and soundscape “portals” to pop up in all of the city’s eight wards. The campaign features local community luminaries like award-winning chef Erik Bruner-Yang, 9-year-old rap prodigy Fly Zyah, Washington-based artist Trap Bob, and more, along with a “future of music” mix by deaf artist and advocate DJ SupaLee.

FUTURES opening weekend is November 19-21. To get the newest lineup announcements and to join the weekend’s RSVP list, go to futuresremixed.com, which will also serve as the livestreaming destination for all the programs for the duration of the weekend. “FUTURES Remixed” is made possible by Events DC.

The exhibition’s full slate of future-forward public events will be announced monthly starting in November. Every Friday, AIB will also host “Fridays at FUTURES,” a community gathering for pop-up talks, surprises, and constantly changing drop-in activities. See aib.si.edu to plan a visit.
