Review: Yves Tumor @ Echostage – 5/4/2023 [Photos]

Yves Tumor is a rockstar for a new musical generation.

Not one that wants to pander to hit radio trends, though – their latest album’s title alone is a sign of that. Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) is a treasure trove of vulnerable lyricism juxtaposed atop a wild concoction of rock, R&B, and experimental electronica. This unique combination stands out from the rest of the musical pack and has gained Sean Lee Bowie a fervent following.

Their DC stop at Echostage was Bowie at their charismatic 80s-era rock band best, with the artist decked out in leather accessories and a ripped-up shirt proclaiming, ‘FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING FUCK.’ Bowie knows how to rile up a crowd: all they have to do is hop into the pit with a megaphone in hand. Almost immediately, all the hands in the front few rows reached out to get just a touch of Bowie’s shoulder as they sauntered back and forth.Their guitarist, also looking like they stepped straight out of an 80s time machine (perm and all), fervently hoisted his guitar in the air as he wailed on solos and power chords, amping up the crowd in turn. Yves Tumor is a tour de force that should not be missed live – their larger-than-life persona and grandiose, yet experimental sound made the show an unforgettable one.

Opening for Yves Tumor was the grunge-inspired Pretty Sick, whose album Makes Me Sick Makes Me Smile was released in 2022 through Dirty Hit, and the electronic/rock/video game-inspired Frost Children, whose album SPEED RUN was released this year through True Panther Records.
