Review: Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ The Anthem – 05/02/23 [Photos]

On May 2nd, for the first time in thirteen years, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs took the stage in Washington, DC, to launch their highly-anticipated tour with a sold-out show at The Anthem. Their set hit the ground running – literally – from the moment it started, with lead singer and alt-rock legend Karen O running across the stage while spinning and twirling her outfit as the band performed their new Perfume Genius-featured hit, “Spitting Off The Edge Of The World,” from their latest album, Cool It Down. They wasted no time keeping the party going with their second song as confetti shot out into the crowd.

The veteran band has taken over the alternative rock genre for the past twenty years, but with the high energy they brought, you would think they were still in their early twenties. That said, their years of experience and connection to the crowd and stage presence truly shined through as they performed new songs like “Wolf” blended in with their set of the classics like “Heads Will Roll,” “Soft Shock,” and others. At several moments, Karen O would scream into the mic, arch her back, and almost put the entire head of the mic in her mouth. The entire set was an unreal experience, from the dancing to the confetti and even giant eyeball balloons bouncing around the crowd.

A personal highlight of mine was their performance of “Maps.” Growing up, I spent hours playing the video game, Rock Band, which featured this song in the game. Never would have thought I’d get to experience that song live, so seeing Yeah Yeah Yeahs play it on stage in 2023 felt so special.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are touring through the first week in October. Check the YYY Website to see if they are stopping by your city, and make sure to catch them live!
