REVIEW: SACHI @ U Street Music Hall – 11/06/19 [PHOTOS]

Nights With Ruby out via Casablanca Records

Earlier this month, New Zealand’s SACHI played their debut D.C. show for a packed U Street Music Hall. The duo, comprised of longtime friends and collaborators Will Thomas and Nick Chrisp, were on the east coast opening for Phantoms on the heels of their latest EP, Nights With Ruby.

On Nights With Ruby, the duo has taken their light-hearted and euphoric sound to a new level. A noticeable shift that makes their latest live show even more exciting to experience. “Sparking My Fire” feat. Roe is the EP’s lead single – a house-infused feel-good gem that got D.C.’s crowd worked up and dancing. It’s hard to believe, as the song surges beyond 6 million streams on Spotify, that it’s hardly my favorite from the EP. Really, SACHI has made it difficult to just choose one or two.

“Worst Behaviour” featuring NYC singer Sam DeRosa follows and it may just have the perfect vibe for any summer playlist. Even now as winter charges forward stateside, this track is keeping the sandy beach vibes alive and well. It was also one of the tracks I couldn’t wait to hear live and SACHI did not disappoint.

Throughout their set, Nick and Will were swiftly interchanging their live instruments. One moment, they were on keys and synths, then back to the guitar, and then off to the drums for frenzied solos and booming strobes. I couldn’t help but think of what they could do with an Odesza-sized drumline behind them. They even brought the stage to the crowd at one point – jumping down to play a slower number on the guitar.

In addition to playing their NZ gold-certified single “Shelter,” which also opens Nights With Ruby, the rising duo also paid homage to Daft Punk, playing the universally-loved, “Around the World” to a wild response. Their 2016 chart-topper “No More” and later “Hollywood Angel,” another must-hear from the new EP, rounded out an energetic set that ended way too soon.

Of course, SACHI’s debut in D.C. would’ve been incomplete without a live cut of their Lorde-backed remix of “Green Light.” That track is already such a massive tune and yet SACHI gives it a twist that makes it feel completely new and unique. As their live show develops and they release more music, it’ll be cool to see SACHI back in D.C. as headliners.

Nights With Ruby is the duo’s first release on Casablanca Records. In addition to the songs mentioned, the EP includes “Love Me Now,” ‘Unapologetically” and “Find Yourself.” Stream it below and see all future SACHI tour dates here.
