Acclaimed Australian indie trio daste. have released their latest single, “holding on to you.” It is the final taste from their upcoming debut album, dusk / dawn, and continues the band’s penchant for lo-fi dance mixed with organic sounds.

This time, daste. have slowed down the tempo just enough to create a track that moves you to tears, as well as making you want to move. Featuring guest vocals from Brisbane songstress Uhkirra, “holding on to you” is a duet in the truest sense of the word. The call and response thrillingly echo “Don’t Give Up” by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, modernized for the social media age. Like previous singles, the track is accompanied by a simple yet effective visual, depicting a lonesome man waiting at the airport with flowers. Watch below.

Lyrically, “holding on to you” chronicles the dying embers of a distant relationship, where two people seemingly can’t find closure. This sentiment hits especially close to home, with the current state of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The heart-wrenching lyrics are suitably backed by a repetitive, jangling piece of guitar work that is sure to conjure up feelings of what could have been. However, it is not all doom and gloom. Midway through the track, daste. and Uhkirra implore us to “Open up, open up,” a repeated phrase that suggests all is not lost, and the future could be bright.

Slated for a release in August, dusk / dawn surely can’t come soon enough. Listen to daste.’s new song below.
