Empress Of has released a fantastic new single, “HandsOn,” the final preview of her upcoming album, Dream House, which arrives September 18 via Giant Music.

“HandsOn” follows Empress Of’s August single “SYW” featuring Cecile Believe. Written in the aftermath of the Altadena fires that destroyed her family home, Dream House treats rebuilding as much an emotional process as a physical one. While Lorely Rodriguez was writing it, she and her mother were literally watching their house go back up: foundation poured, walls framed, roof and door installed alongside the emotional reconstruction happening in the songs.

“Someone said a phoenix isn’t born, it’s remembered,” Rodriguez says, “and in making this album I remembered why I make music.” “HandsOn” itself is a cry for something tangible, built on dance rhythms and Rodriguez’s wit, the closest thing to a mission statement the album offers before it arrives in full next week. Her mother, Reina, lends her voice to the record, a recurring presence across Empress Of’s catalog that carries particular weight here given what the two of them were rebuilding together in real life.

Empress Of will celebrate the release with a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on September 30, one of the venue’s final performances before it closes this fall, a fitting pairing for an album already threaded with endings and beginnings. Listen below and pre-order Dream House now.
