Angèle has released “Une seule vie,” the second preview of her forthcoming album Instinct, out October 16 via Sony Music. Where lead single “Dis-Le” was about learning to listen to your own instinct, “Une seule vie” is about the harder part: acting on it. Written in the first person as a stream of thought, the song never actually resolves the question. It holds past, present, and future at once, staying in the hesitation until what’s left is just the wanting itself.

The accompanying video, directed by visual artist Thomas Mailaender in his first music-video credit, was shot entirely on 16mm with no digital effects: stop motion, mirrors, and superimpositions all built in front of the camera. Even the total solar eclipse over Europe on August 12 was filmed live, as it happened, and folded into the footage as one more memory breaking into Angèle’s reality.

Instinct is built around returning to the part of yourself that exists before expectation, performance, and external noise, using chrome as a recurring image, cold and reflective on the surface but treated throughout as a space for transformation and freedom.
