Baba Obscura is making its debut in Seattle’s Pioneer Square this November 5 through 8, and it’s built the opposite way most new festivals are. Instead of a fenced field and a single stage, it’s spreading six stages across the neighborhood’s existing venues and asking audiences to walk between them.

The four-day weekend is a joint production between Baba Yaga, founder of Desert Daze, and three Seattle nonprofits: Sonic Guild, Freakout, and Paper Plane Music. The goal goes beyond the lineup: organizers say the weekend is also meant to build professional development and economic opportunity for the city’s independent music scene. The Black Angels headline with a 20th-anniversary set for their debut album Passover, joined by Provoker, Mdou Moctar, Rose City Band, and a lineup that runs deep into Seattle’s own DIY and regional acts.

“As a touring musician, venue owner, and founder of both Baba Obscura and Paper Plane Music, I’ve seen how transformative the right stage, resources, and support can be for an artist,” says Baba Yaga’s Ryan Granger. Pioneer Square, Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, has long hosted the city’s creative communities.
