“Sunflower” is out now via Amuse: Stream
Trans indie bedroom pop artist awfultune is blooming beyond withering and unhealthy relationships in their latest single, “sunflower.”
The song unveils a beautiful melody – jazzy, lo-fi, and hypnotic – as 22-year-old Layla Eden confesses the need to grow beyond the things and people holding her back from discovering her full potential. Slow-burning and soulful, Layla’s songwriting and production stand out once again with flawless execution and delivery. It’s no wonder she’s quickly become one of the year’s artists to watch.
Part of a larger color story, “sunflower” arrives as the third chapter in a six-part creative venture examining emotional themes correlated to colors. The new song soaks in vibrant yellow as a metaphor for realizing self-worth. Meanwhile, awfultune’s last two singles “lovesick” and “SICK OF U” respectively relished juxtaposing feelings of being head-over-heels-in-love versus the thin line between love and hate, pulling inspiration from red and orange.
“‘sunflower’ is about healing from unreciprocated love and putting all that love you wasted on them back into yourself,” shares Layla Eden. “It’s a very positive song and hopefully empowers a ton of people in these situations and reaches the ears it needs to.”
With each song, awfultune is discovering and sharing unique highs and lows and a powerful coming-of-age journey, while finding herself and existing as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. awfultune’s new music follows her 2020 EP, Dear Sarah, which contains the viral single, “I Met Sarah In The Bathroom” and has helped the New Yorker achieve over 150 million global streams.
