Without a doubt, Shawn Mathews is a name you’ll be hearing a lot this year. Today, the rising artist unveils “Honest,” a genre-bending track fueled by good vibes and lovestruck lyricism.
Led by a groovy bassline, funky guitar chords, and upbeat pop sensibilities, “Honest” finds Shawn delving deeper into the elements making his songs inescapable. Cutting through the indie-pop soundscape are Mathews’s smooth and effortlessly on-point vocals. On his new single, Shawn shares: “One big part of my life this last year has been my relationship with my girlfriend. Our relationship was great pre-pandemic, but once the pandemic hit, I feel like it allowed for her and I to have more time for one another and, in turn, just strengthened our relationship. This song expresses all these things I feel and have felt for her. You would think that spending so much time with a person would make you sick of them, but in my case, I feel like the pandemic has brought us closer together, and I’m super grateful for that.”
“Honest” is accompanied by a visualizer co-directed by Shawn and Aleena Zahid. The song follows Shawn’s February breakout single, “Sunshine,” which, upon its release, landed on the Spotify editorial playlists: Good Vibes, Young & Free, Study Break, Fresh Finds: Pop, Fresh Finds, and Jasmine. “Sunshine” also surpassed 700K streams today, proving again the 21-year-old artist has a future as bright as his song’s title.
