Review: Beach Fossils high energy Illuminates 930 Club [Photos]

Beach Fossils’ return to Washington, DC, was beyond memorable. From the moment the four band members stepped on stage, it was evident the night would be special. Drenched in vibrant lights and bathed in the electric ambiance of the 9:30 Club, the band kicked off with a high-energy performance of “Don’t Fade Away” off their new album, Bunny.

Four weeks into their five-week US tour, Beach Fossils’ frontman paused throughout the show to express his varying emotions about touring, noting how mentally fatiguing it can be alongside all the fun and exciting moments. Regardless, he decided early on in the night that this was already his favorite show of the tour.

Fans were in for a surprise when lead singer Dustin Payseur cut their third song short to address a scuffle that broke out in the crowd between one fan who wanted to start a mosh pit and another who didn’t. “For those of you who have never been to a Beach Fossils show, some people like to mosh, and some people don’t. If you want to mosh, you’re welcome to mosh, and if you don’t want to mosh, maybe move towards the back of the crowd,” Payseur declared. He then expressed his frustration about this incident occurring halfway through one of his favorite songs to play, “What a Pleasure,” which he now had to skip due to the show’s time limit. “I love you both, but please don’t fight.”

As the night progressed, Beach Fossils delivered a relentless barrage of energy. Guitarist Tommy Davidson enthusiastically swayed and jumped to the music, later taking a moment to shout out his family who was at the show. Being from Maryland, he was excited to be playing a hometown show.

And the crowd did indeed mosh, even during slower moments for songs like “Sleep Apnea.” At one point they got so rowdy that a fan jumped on stage, only to be quickly hailed down by security. It’s safe to say there was a constant energy throughout the entire show that kept the concertgoers in a euphoric daze.

Payseur ended the show with a sincere, sentimental thank you to the Washington, DC crowd, followed by equally sincere screams of love and thanks from the audience. It was the perfect seal to an incredible night that kicked off with Virginia Beach band Turnover, who were excited to be playing close to home.

Beach Bunny’s new album, Bunny, is out now on Bayonet Records.
