“Anyone But Me” is Joy Crookes’ first single of the year: Stream
Rising star Joy Crookes returns with “Anyone But Me,” her first release of 2020. The 21-year-old has already had an amazing year. From being nominated for the Rising Star Award at The BRITs to recently becoming the face of the Tommy Jeans x Looney Tunes collaboration, it’s safe to say she’s making a quick ascension. Now she’s back with the lead single from her upcoming debut album, which is due on Insanity Records this year.
Though born and raised in London, Crookes is of Irish and Bangladeshi descent, a blend that can be heard throughout the track’s beautiful instrumentation and sound. The track tackles mental health among diverse cultures and across generations, with an alluring vocal delivery at the forefront. “I’ve suffered from mental health issues since I was young. Where I grew up, this wasn’t a topic you would bring up when your mum was fixing you a plate of dal or when your mates were showing you how to flirt with boys and girls, so when I had my first episode of depression I didn’t really know where to turn to,” she shared.
Premiering on Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World this week, the song follows three EP releases: Influence, Reminiscence, and Perception. After her past works, the rising artist is already receiving due attention, having toured internationally to sold-out crowds and performed at festivals such as BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend.
