“Don’t Judge Me’ is out via Young Turks

British singer-songwriter, dancer, actress, and all-around artist FKA twigs has teamed up with drill rapper Headie One and English producer Fred again to unveil “Don’t Judge Me.” The track arrives following the latter artists’ 2020 mixtape, GANG, which includes the interlude “Judge Me” featuring the three artists.

“Don’t Judge Me” finds twigs delivering her signature ethereal vocals and an incredible visual performance while Headie One dissects prejudice in the U.K., exclaiming during the song: “We can walk free, but are we really walkin’ free here? How can this be home when I feel I wanna flee here?”

The song is accompanied by a stunningly cinematic visual co-directed by twigs and Emmanuel Adjei, who previously worked on Beyoncé’s visual album, Black is King. Set into three acts, according to twigs, both Headie and her have an act each, while scenes cut to prominent Black personalities like poets Solomon O.B and Benjamin Zephaniah, writer Reni Eddo-Lodge, models Kukua Williams, Munroe Bergdorf, and Danto Earth, performer Lisa Elde, entrepreneur Nicole Crentsil, fitness trainer Efua Baker, soccer player Mahlon Romeo, and radio host Clara Amfo, standing in front of the iconic Fons Americanus fountain by artist Kara Walker. A piece on the history of the transatlantic slave trade and is currently installed in London’s Tate Modern.

Speaking with No Signal radio, twigs discusses her act and how it represents her feelings and ones shared by other women of color in the United Kingdom. She says that despite her powerful moves and incredible dances we see her being pulled back by invisible forces – interpreted as people fighting against oppressors they sometimes can’t even see.

The track follows news twigs completed writing her highly-anticipated, third album while in quarantine. Discussing the project with the GRAMMY Museum and BBC’s Grounded with Louis Theroux, the British artist unveiled the next project will feature more collaborations and features than any of her previous releases.
