Shannon & The Clams Share “The Moon Is In The Wrong Place”

Shannon & The Clams have conjured magic from the rubbles of tragedy on their new single, “The Moon Is In The Wrong Place.”

From the moment the opening notes hit, a visceral energy grips you, pulsating through every chord and lyric. It’s a sonic journey that harkens back to the golden era of psych-rock while carving out its own distinct path. In a genre often steeped in homage, Shannon & The Clams manage to infuse a breath of fresh air into familiar territory, crafting a song that feels both rooted in tradition and boldly contemporary.

The first glimpse of their upcoming album, due for release on May 10, 2024, “The Moon Is In The Wrong Place” spotlights the band’s musical evolution while also capturing a poignant chapter in their personal journey. Following the heart-wrenching sudden loss of singer/frontwoman Shannon Shaw’s fiancé, Joe Haener, the group embarked on an emotional odyssey, grappling with grief and resilience in equal measure. Produced by their longtime collaborator Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, the album promises to be a raw and cathartic exploration of love, loss, and the human spirit, set to release under Auerbach’s acclaimed label, Easy Eye Sound.

On the album’s title track, Shannon & The Clams transcend mere sonic experimentation, delving into the depths of their collective psyche to deliver a work as introspective as it is infectious. Shaw’s vocals, ranging from haunting whispers to soaring crescendos, guide listeners through labyrinthine melodies, while the band, comprised of Shaw, guitarist Cody Blanchard, keyboard player Will Sprott, and drummer Nate Mahan, weaves a vivid sonic tapestry.

The accompanying music video, directed by Bobbi Rich, propels viewers into a kaleidoscopic dreamscape that mirrors the celestial themes of the song. It’s a visual feast perfectly complementing the song’s cosmic journey, offering a glimpse into the boundless creativity and imagination of Shannon & The Clams.

In preparation for recording, the band passed demos back and forth for months, engaging in uncharacteristic jam sessions on unfinished riffs. Faced with the challenge of finding the right chords for her melodies, Shaw turned to an Omnichord—an electronic instrument with built-in chords and rhythms—unlocking a new creative palette. In 2023, they returned to Nashville to record with Auerbach at Easy Eye Sound Studios, capturing the essence of their collective experience.

“We all felt the urgency of making something that reckoned with this meteor that smashed into our planet,” Sprott says. “This is the most focused record we’ve ever done, as far as everything coming from a singular traumatic event.” See the album art and tracklist for The Moon Is In The Wrong Place below.
