“VULGAR” is out on Capitol Records

Two icons that are anything but strangers to controversy, this filthy dancefloor scorcher is only going to have fans (and haters) talking even more.

An absolute clapback at the vitriol both have faced over their music, live performances, and unapologetic aesthetics, “VULGAR” is a bass-obliterating, hyperpop-leaning song with Eastern strings and synths permeating throughout to create a provocative reminder that these stars are unafraid to bite back.

Above all, two megastars with nothing left to prove – Sam Smith, a 5x GRAMMY winner with over 40 million albums sold, and Madonna, the best-selling female artist of all time – are clearly just having fun in the studio as they reject repression, demand respect, and deliver an anthem set to enrage their toughest critics and have the dancefloor sashaying and voguing the night away.

Smith, who’s known for their spectacular range, keeps the vocals to an ominous and robotic growl, while Madonna provides a refreshing energy that proves she’s still applying exceptional pressure four decades into her career and has a distinct knack for releasing generation-defying pop delicacies.

A bold celebration of liberation and confidence, “VULGAR” was conceptualized in February after the 2023 GRAMMYs, a night that sparked criticism and rumors due to Madonna’s appearance and Sam Smith’s “Unholy” performance with Kim Petras, which had conservatives and conspiracy theorists absolutely losing it.

Released by Capitol Records, “VULGAR” was produced by ILYA for MXM Productions, Cirkut, Omer Fedi, Ryan Tedder, Jimmy Napes, Sam and Lauren D’elia, Madonna’s vocal producer and engineer. The song arrives as Madonna is set to embark on her 84-date Celebration Tour on July 15th and Sam prepares to launch the North American leg of GLORIA The Tour on July 25th. Stream below.
