Purity Ring celebrates 10 years of debut album shrine with special addition
Purity Ring recently took the stage for two nights at 9:30 Club following the release of shrines X, a tenth-anniversary reissue of their debut album, which includes three new songs.
With shrines at the forefront of the performance, fans went wild for 2012 tracks like “fineshrine,” “lofticries,” and “obedear.” My personal favorite from the new tracks was “x inovein.” Other crowd favorites came from 2015’s another eternity, with beautiful songs like “begin again” and “bodyache” filling the iconic Washington, D.C. venue.
The long-awaited show, which was rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, did not disappoint and was met with precautions by vocalist Megan James and producer Corin Roddick since they both remained masked throughout the night. However, with the electronic pop duo’s stunning visual effects and extraordinary attire, the M95s were hardly a distraction. If anything, it added to the mystique that has always surrounded the Canadian duo.
Purity Ring offers a special sound that can be hard to define. James’s vocals feel other-worldly and supernatural – yet techno-laced. Her dynamic voice reminded me of Lauren Mayberry of beloved synth-pop group CHVRCHES.
Any pop or EDM lover would appreciate Purity Ring’s synth instrumentals and upbeat choruses, they make you want to dance without taking your eyes off the stage. Each song brought a unique aesthetic, keeping everyone in entranced and wanting more. See more photos from Purity Ring’s show below.
