Los Angeles trio, Gal Pal, has unveiled their new single and music video, “Mirror,” their first release since 2019. The track is led by Emelia Austin’s unique and off-kilter vocals, accompanied by menacing guitar riffs, crashing drums, and echoing harmonies, all enhanced by swirling indie production. The song’s lyrics explore the theme of feeling stuck in a pattern, reflecting on the anxiety that comes with allowing others to misshape one’s identity.

Composed of Austin, Shayna Hahn, and Nico Romero, the trio created “Mirror” while writing in isolation for the first time. The experience led to newfound confidence and vision, resulting in a significant transformation of the track’s sound through production assistance from Danny Nogueiras and Sami Perez (Cherry Glazerr, Jerry Paper). Director Will Rydall’s accompanying visual amplifies the song’s enigmatic vibe, showing the band in their practice space and exploring nearby hills.

Gal Pal’s serendipitous meeting while living in the same dorm in college provided a non-judgmental and generative launching pad for them to learn how to play and write songs together. Their evolution is evident in “Mirror,” which showcases the trio’s growth and willingness to experiment. The single sets the bar high for future releases, leaving us eagerly anticipating a follow-up to their 2017 debut album, Girlish, and 2019 EP, Unrest/Unfeeling. Fans can catch Gal Pal performing live in Los Angeles at Zebulon with Enumclaw & Nitefire on March 10th. Tickets are available here.
