It’s no surprise flipturn gets the hype they get.
On the second of their two sold-out nights at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, the crowd was completely wild. Immediately jumping into their song “Churches” and quickly following with their hit “Vanilla,” the band was on fire from the moment they stepped on stage.
Frontman Dylan Basse’s captivating vocals entwined throughout the perfectly nostalgic and bright instrumentals, sending the room into an immense buzz of emotional energy. There were several people in the crowd who had been to the show the night before as well, proving the passion that surrounds flipturn.
The five band members danced and whipped their hair through the 21-song setlist, hitting fan favorites like “Savannah” and “Chicago.” Their chemistry and enthusiasm fused together gives them a magnificent ability to make you feel nostalgia, happiness, and catharsis all at once. When it came time for “August,” all the phones came out and somehow the room got even louder. For a song from an EP that was released 6 years ago, it still rings so strongly in the ears and hearts of everyone the tune has captured.
Throughout the show, it was clear flipturn had a special excitement to play the 9:30 Club. The band repeatedly expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to perform at such a legendary venue, and their appreciation was echoed by the enthusiastic response of the crowd. It’s easy to see why the 9:30 Club is a dream venue for so many artists.
They rounded off the night with an encore featuring an enthralling cover of “Reptilia” by The Strokes. By the last note, the entire crowd had two hands shaking in the air and voices hollering with praise. It sealed the fact that flipturn is one of the most exciting and satisfying bands in the indie scene today, and they show no signs of slowing. Listen to the band’s debut album, Shadowglow, out now on Dualtone.
