Doechii and SZA reunite on “girl, get up.”: Stream
“girl, get up.” is out on TDE/Capitol Records
Doechii isn’t just running the game; she’s closing a defining year by reuniting with SZA on “girl, get up.,” a slow-burning R&B victory lap where Doechii raps with bite and SZA flexes her honey-dipped range. It’s not the pop lane of “Anxiety” but rather a return to form—smooth, measured, and firmly in her wheelhouse.
Jay Versace sets an early-2000s atmosphere by flipping the Neptunes-produced “What Happened To That Boy” (Baby ft. Clipse) into a spacious groove that leans into a nostalgic R&B snap while creating room for Doechii to rip through heavy-hitting bars.
Lyrically, Doechii addresses the noise around her name without detours—industry-plant chatter, gendered double standards, and the nonlinear road from hunger to the heights. “Why sell my soul when I know I’m God?” frames the stance as boundary-setting, not bait.
Throughout, Doechii drives with sharp precision, SZA glides with ease, and together they lock into a groove that suits them both and sparks an unmistakable chemistry we first heard on the “Persuasive” remix a few years ago.
Directed by James Mackel, the visual leans on light and negative space to heighten movement and feeling. Doechii is seen dancing from a window into a dim hotel room, then onto an adjacent terrace; tight framing and shadow let small gestures read big. The closing sequence pans from Doechii seated high in a stadium to a lit stage and a waiting crowd, connecting the shift from the private focus of Swamp Sessions to the public scale she now commands.
“girl, get up.” closes the experimental Swamp Sessions run—home to quick-strike entries like “BULLFROG,” “NISSAN ALTIMA,” and “CATFISH,” written on a one-hour clock, with the latter two landing on Alligator Bites Never Heal, which earned Doechii her first GRAMMY for Best Rap Album in February 2025. Stream “girl, get up.” and follow Doechii for updates on her upcoming album.
