‘Cellophane’ is out now on Young Turks Records
The moment has finally arrived. FKA twigs is back with a new video and single called “Cellophane.” After days of dropping hints, the English avant-pop singer posted an announcement online, saying: “throughout my life, I’ve practiced my way to being the best I could be, it didn’t work this time. I had to tear down every process I’d ever relied on. go deeper. rebuild. start again.” The “Video Girl” shared the announcement with a still from the epic music video directed by Andrew Thomas Huang.
“Cellophane” is twigs’ first release since her 2016 one-off “Good to Love” and the surprise release of M3LL155X in 2015. With the singer-songwriter and dancer’s first release in over three years out now, let’s hope this is a first glimpse into the long-awaited follow-up to 2014’s LP 1 – an album that is still on heavy rotation in any respectable library.
With “Cellophane,” we find FKA twigs sharing some highly emotional and vulnerable lyrics. “Didn’t I do it for you? Why don’t I do It for you?” she asks over reserved brushes of the piano and echoing electronica. The video shows twigs pole-dancing through a world of pain and glitchy digital visual – it’s quite moving to see.
