Chicago came alive as indie-pop sensation JAWNY took to the stage to celebrate the release of his debut album, It’s Never Fair, Always True, out now on Interscope Records. In the blink of an eye, JAWNY has gone from an emerging artist to a headlining sensation, and a sold-out Thalia Hall was beyond ready to witness the astonishing culmination of his quick rise.
The evening’s magic began with the dreamy and introspective tunes of rising indie-pop artist Wallice. Her delicate voice and emotionally resonant lyrics drew fans in as she played “Japan” and her hit single, “Punching Bag.” Before performing “Funeral,” a song described as her favorite song she’s ever made, the young artist gave fans a preview of her new EP with a song called “Best Friend.” Her set ended with the wildly popular “23,” as fans sang every word back.
The anticipation as Wallice’s set ended was uncontainable, radiating throughout Thalia Hall as JAWNY seamlessly took over. Known for his high-energy performances and earworm melodies, he had the crowd dancing from the very first note as he ripped through “wide eyed,” an infectious track I’ve had stuck in my head for months, and “adios,” another album must-hear.
As the night continued, JAWNY proved why he’s become a standout indie-pop artist. Whether it was weaving through past EPs or a slightly humorous, yet earnestly-executed cover of Taylor Swift, the energy never wavered. Neither did JAWNY’s evident knack for putting on an incredible live show. A mid-set pinnacle arrived as JAWNY took fans back to “Honeypie,” the RIAA gold-certified breakout single that eventually led to him signing with Interscope.
While most of the show found JAWNY with his guitar in hand, the night took a softer turn as he played “fall in love” on the piano. The intimate moment revealed the depth of his artistry and showcased his ability to connect with his audience profoundly as the energy shifted with masterful ease and awe.
The night at Thalia Hall was a celebration of indie-pop at its finest. From the dreamy opening provided by Wallice to JAWNY’s unforgettable performance, the show was not only a testament to his undeniable talent and rapid growth but also a grand display of an incredible debut album that fans need to experience live.
